Body Condition Score Guide

Veterinarians use a 1-9 scale to assess body condition. It's more reliable than weight alone because it accounts for muscle mass and frame size.

  • 1-3: Ribs, spine, and hip bones visible. Waist extreme. Needs vet attention.
  • 4: Ribs easily felt with slight fat cover. Waist visible. Slightly underweight.
  • 5: Ribs felt with light pressure. Waist visible from above. Ideal.
  • 6: Ribs felt with firm pressure. Waist barely visible. Slightly overweight.
  • 7-9: Ribs difficult/impossible to feel. No waist. Fat deposits on chest and tail base. Overweight to obese.
