Breed-Specific Feeding: Labs Are Not Chihuahuas

Luna is a labradoodle. She weighs 22 kg, has the energy of a caffeinated squirrel, and eats like she has never seen food before. My neighbor's Chihuahua, Peanut, weighs 2.5 kg, sleeps 18 hours a day, and picks at his food like a picky toddler. Same species. Completely different metabolic needs.

Yet most feeding guides treat all dogs the same. "Feed 1 cup per 20 pounds." That is like saying all humans should eat 2,000 calories. It ignores breed, activity, body composition, and genetics. Honestly? It drives me nuts.

Large Breeds: The Bloat Risk

Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Standard Poodles are prone to gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat). Feeding one large meal, feeding immediately before or after exercise, and high-fat diets increase risk. Large breeds need 2-3 smaller meals, lower fat content, and elevated feeding bowls.

They also grow fast. Too-fast growth in large-breed puppies causes orthopedic problems. Large-breed puppy formulas have controlled calcium and phosphorus to slow growth. Do not feed adult food to a Great Dane puppy. Seriously. I learned this the hard way โ€” not with my dog, but with a friend's Bernese Mountain Dog puppy who ended up with joint issues at age 2 because they fed adult kibble to save money.

Small Breeds: The Fast Metabolism

Small dogs have higher metabolic rates per pound. A Chihuahua needs about 40 kcal per pound. A Labrador needs about 25. Small breeds also have tiny stomachs โ€” they cannot eat large volumes. Three to four small meals work better than one big one.

Hypoglycemia is a real risk in toy breeds. If a Yorkie skips breakfast, blood sugar can crash. Consistent meal timing matters more for a 3-pound dog than a 30-pound dog. My girlfriend's aunt had a Yorkie who fainted once because she slept in and missed the 7 AM feeding. Terrifying.

Brachycephalic Breeds: Breathing Affects Everything

Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers struggle to breathe. Exercise intolerance means lower calorie needs. But they are also prone to obesity, which makes breathing worse. It is a vicious cycle. Portion control is critical for these breeds.

They also tend to have sensitive stomachs. High-quality, easily digestible food with limited ingredients works best. Avoid rich, fatty foods that trigger digestive upset. I mean, have you seen a Pug with diarrhea? Not fun for anyone involved.

Working Breeds: Fuel for the Machine

Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Huskies were bred to work all day. A sedentary Border Collie will gain weight on standard portions. An active one needs 2ร— the calories. The same breed, different lifestyles, different needs.

Luna is moderately active โ€” two walks, some fetch, occasional hiking. She needs about 1,100 kcal. A farm Border Collie herding sheep all day might need 1,800. Use the calculator and be honest about activity level. Do not say "moderate" if your dog's biggest exertion is walking to the food bowl.

Dave wrote about why most people overfeed and it applies double for working breeds on rest days. Actually, I should mention โ€” Luna gained 3 pounds last winter because I kept feeding her summer portions during the snowy months when we barely went outside. My fault. Took me a month to notice. Oops.
