Dog BMI Assessment
Body condition scoring is how veterinarians actually assess weight. Use this tool to score your dog from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (obese), with visual guides for each level.

How It Works
Calculation Principle
Veterinarians do not use BMI for dogs — we use Body Condition Score (BCS), a 1-to-9 scale based on visual and tactile assessment. This tool translates your observations (rib visibility, waistline, abdominal tuck, fat cover) into a standardized BCS score. Each parameter is scored 0-4, and the total maps to the 9-point BCS scale used by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA).
How to Use
Enter your dog's name, breed, and current weight. Use the dropdown menus to assess ribs, waistline, abdominal tuck, and fat cover based on the descriptions. Click Assess Body Condition to get a BCS score from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese). Save assessments to track trends over time.
Practical Tips
Feel your dog's ribs monthly — they should feel like piano keys under a thin blanket. A visible waist from above and a slight abdominal tuck from the side indicate a healthy BCS of 4-5. If you cannot feel ribs without pressing, your dog is likely overweight (BCS 6+). Take photos from above and the side monthly to compare visually.
